Devils Peak at a glance

The suburb of Devil’s Peak lies below the slopes of Devil’s Peak between Vredehoek and the Table Mountain Nature Reserve. Superb views over the city and Table Bay. This is the only suburb not zoned for flats, townhouses or multi-dwelling units and as such smaller homes are found in this small enclave. Devil’s Peak – the mountain peak – is a distinctive landmark to the left of Table Mountain.

The Peak starts from Hospital Bend, aka Rhodes Drive at the top of Observatory. Its slopes gently ascend from Groote Schuur Hospital past the zebras and bokkies, and past the old blockhouse to its summit height of 1000m. One can easily walk up its summit which was originally known as Windburg. The only safe ascent is considered to be from the Saddle, between the peak and Table Mountain. When you see clouds on Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak, you can imagine the smoking contest between a soldier and `the Devil’ centuries ago, which gave the peak its name and the `tablecloth’ over the mountain.
